Sigvard Eklund and Ricardo Galvão

The ICTP Prize in honour of Manuel Sandoval Vallarta (Mexico), Chairperson of the ICTP Scientific Council  (1964-1970), in the fields of High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics and Plasma Physics, was awarded to Dr. Ricardo Galvão, Institute of Advanced Studies, São Paulo, Brazil

for significant theoretical contributions in fields ranging from magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability, resistive modes and interaction of laser radiation with matter. In particular, he has developed an equilibrium and stability code and then in collaboration with Professors Rosenbluth and Coppi he has developed a well-known theory for the resistive internal kink mode. He has been engaged in experimental research and has been able to design and construct a small device to excite nonlinear ion acoustic waves. Together with Professor Nascimento, he has designed and constructed the first Tokamak built in Brazil.
