HONOURING OUR FOUNDER

They arrived from as far away as Australia and South Africa; from as nearby as Croatia and Austria; and from many points in between--Argentina, India, Kuwait, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Swaziland and Sudan, to name just a few. In all, more than 150 scientific researchers and administrators from around the globe came to the Abdus Salam Memorial Meeting to celebrate the memory of ICTP's founder, the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam. Among those in attendance were Rexhep Meidani, President of Albania; Hans Blix, Director General Emeritus of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and Adnan Badran, Deputy Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Representatives from the Italian government were also present. In addition, members of Salam's family flew in from the United Kingdom and the United States to reminisce about their father and grandfather. The highlight of the meeting took place on 21 November, exactly one year after the death of Salam, when the ICTP officially changed its name to The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics.
