INDIAN STRINGS

"Strings 2001," a gathering of 350 string theorists from around the world, was held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, India, from 5 to 10 January. For the first time in the 16-year history of this premier gathering of theoretical physicists, the meeting took place in a developing country. ICTP co-sponsored the event. David Gross, Stephen Hawking, Ashoke Sen and Edward Witten were among those who gave presentations. Kumar Narain, staff scientist with ICTP's High Energy Group, and ICTP postdocs Elena Caceres from Peru and Kaushik Ray from India represented the Centre at the meeting, which received extensive coverage in India's national press.
