The brain drain-the migration of scientists from the developing to the developed world-may represent the only way for many scientists from the South to develop their intellectual capacities. Erio Tosatti, ICTP acting director, offered this viewpoint in an article published in January in scienza@trieste.it, a scientific bi-monthly supplement of Trieste's daily newspaper Il Piccolo. ICTP's long-standing strategy, Tosatti noted, has been to provide Third World scientists with 'a home away from home,' so that they can pursue their careers without having to abandon the countries of their birth. The supplement also included articles by ICTP scientists Faheem Hussain, head of the Office of External Activities; Yu Lu, former head of the Condensed Matter Physics Group, who has recently returned to China; and Fedor Mesinger, adjunct staff member in ICTP's Physics of Weather and Climate Group.
